And even a bigger yeah to the Ellenbergers, fellow missionaries in Bamako, who have satellite tv so we could watch it. Yes, it started at 1 in the morning and we didn't go to bed until 4. But hey, we got to watch a LIVE basketball game...that we could really see. (Sometimes we watch games on Skype- my parents turn their webcam toward the tv...the connection isn't great though so we hear the sound fine but only see the bodies move every once in awhile). It was awesome. We were up in Bamako because we took my mom back. (see post below) We went to watch the final four game as well, though I slept through that game aside from a few minutes here and there. But I was determined to be awake for the final. And even though it was pretty much a blowout without tons of excitement, it was a lot of fun. For awhile, we forgot we were here in Mali. It was fun.
The next day, as we were driving out of town, we stopped on the side of the road to get a phone card. One of the guys was wearing a UNC shirt (the new one for the "turn it blue" campaign to get more people to wear carolina blue to events). We pointed to him out of the crowd to buy the card...if only we could have gotten a picture. We tried to explain to him the significance of his shirt, though he didn't understand, but hey, it was neat to see it. So we've seen a kid wearing a UNC shirt in Bamako and a Duke sweatshirt in Koutiala and they have no idea what they mean. The best shirt Brett saw was a teenage girl wearing a shirt that only came to just above her belly button...it said "I'm the big brother." Ha!
