We rest on Thee

I've been loving that song lately. Just love the thought of resting on Him, despite the circumstances. My Bible has this song written out on one of the margins and says that Jim Elliot and his friends sang this song as they went to meet the Auca Indians the day they were murdered. Knowing that (which I'm sure most of you already knew and I may have as well, but I had forgotten) makes the words even more powerful.

  1. We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
    We go not forth alone against the foe;
    Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
    We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
  2. Yes, in Thy Name, O Captain of salvation!
    In Thy dear Name, all other names above;
    Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,
    Our Prince of glory and our King of love.
  3. We go in faith, our own great weakness feeling,
    And needing more each day Thy grace to know:
    Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
    “We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.”
  4. We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
    Thine is the battle, Thine shall be the praise;
    When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
    Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.

  1. Those are great words indeed. It wasn't that long ago that I had read "The Shadow of the Almighty." Jim Elliot was a most unusual man, one whose heart was so devoted to God. I just have (last night) finished reading a book about George Mueller, who always prayed believing God would answer his prayers, and He did.
